Pala Language Revitalization Program

Introduction

The Pala Band of Mission Indians has received the Administration for Native Americans grant award under the American Rescue Plan Act Emergency Native Language Program. This project has provided us the opportunity to teach and archive Cupeño to all members of the community.

There will be twelve (12) weekly opportunities to attend 30-minute lesson sessions that focus on learning words associated with greetings, family relations, animals, weather, and much more. In combination, these lessons will lead to students being able to form sentences and enhance their vocabulary in Cupeño. These sessions will be recorded and uploaded onto Mulu’Wetam: The Archive, an online archive created through this grant opportunity, for viewing classes at your own convenience.

Tech Set-up and Support

How do I access the Language Revitalization page?

  1. Option 1. VISIT http://www.palatribe.com/residents/language-revitalization/ and ADD this link to the browser’s bookmarks or favorites.
  2. Option 2. VISIT palatribe.com. In the Main Menu (top left corner), HOVER over “RESIDENTS,” CLICK on “Language Revitalization.”
  3. Option 3. CLICK on the ads and banners on palatribe.com.
  4. Option 4. GO TO the search feature (upper right corner, “Search this site…”), ENTER the term “Language,” and the first results should be “Language Revitalization PAGE.”

How do I join a class?

Desktop & Laptop

  1. VISIT http://www.palatribe.com/residents/language-revitalization/.
  2. SCROLL DOWN to “Cupeño Language Classes” and CLICK “Zoom Link.” (a new window should pop up)
  3. If the Zoom.us App is already installed, you will be directed to the classes. (If you are not directed to the class: 1 – Click Open zoom.us on the dialog shown by your browser. 2 – If you don’t see a dialog, click Launch Meeting)
  4. If you have NOT used the Zoom.us App before, CLICK “Download Now.”
  5. The Zoom.us App will download on your computer. (see download action at the bottom of the screen)
  6. Once it is done downloading, CLICK the download box and follow the prompts to install the app. (install pop up should appear)
  7. Once the meeting begins, click “Join with Computer Audio.”

Mobile or Tablet Device

  1. If Zoom Cloud Meetings is not already installed on your device, GO to the ZOOM Cloud Meetings (Apple devices) or ZOOM Cloud Meetings (Android devices) and download the app.
  2. VISIT http://www.palatribe.com/residents/language-revitalization/.
  3. SCROLL down, to “Cupeño Language Classes”
  4. CLICK on Zoom Link. (the installed ZOOM Cloud Meetings app should open)
  5. Once the meeting begins, click “Join with Computer Audio”

How do I continue attending classes?

  1. VISIT http://www.palatribe.com/residents/language-revitalization/.
  2. SEE “How do I join a class” above if the app is not installed on your computer or device.
  3. SCROLL DOWN to “Cupeño Language Classes” and CLICK “Zoom Link” (a new window should pop up)
  4. CLICK on or PRESS on “Zoom Link”
  5. CLICK on or PRESS on “Open Zoom.us” near the top of your screen. (The Zoom app should open)
  6. CLICK on or PRESS on “Join with Computer Audio.”

When are classes?

Classes have set times, days, and teachers. Twelve (12) classes will be taught each week and each class is thirty (30) minutes long.

  2. SCROLL down to “Class Days and Times” (under “Cupeño Language Classes”) to view the schedule.

How do I get materials?

  1. VISIT http://www.palatribe.com/residents/language-revitalization/.
  2. SCROLL down to “Class Days and Times” (under “Cupeño Language Classes”).
  3. GO TO the week you are interested. CLICK on the week and the menu should dropdown.
  4. FIND the class materials under Day, Time, and after the Class Name.
  5. CLICK on the link for the PDF attachment. (Depending on your browser settings the PDF will open in a new window or be accessible through your device’s designated Downloads folder.)
